ChatGPT, a Threat or a Treat?

ChatGPT has become a buzzword these days. Everything is only one click away, so is it a game-changer for learning, or just a way to avoid doing the work?

We asked some Moroccan high school students what they think, and here are some of their responses:

The impact of ChatGPT on students is significant, encompassing both benefits and challenges. It provides students with quick access to information and explanation, making learning easier and helping them understand complex topics. However, overusing it can also result in shallow learning where students go for quick answers instead of deeply engaging with the material. Therefore, we believe that while ChatGPT can be a useful educational tool, students must use it responsibly to ensure that it enhances their learning rather than hindering it.

Sara H. & Sirine K. (Azzahrae 2 High School)

ChatGPT has become more popular among students than in other categories, as they can use it to do their homework and essays and solve them effortlessly. Yet, depending on AI can create complications because we may never learn how to do things ourselves, and relying on it limits our knowledge.

Yasmine B. (Ajdir High School)

ChatGPT can be helpful for students but using it too much can make them lazy. Since it gives quick answers, students might stop trying to find information on their own which hurt their ability to think and solve problems. Relying too much on it can also affect memory and learning. When used too often ChatGPT can slow down students growing their important skills.

Rayane T. (Ibn Maja High School)

ChatGPT supports students in improving their writing and creativity by suggesting ideas, refining essays, and offereing grammar corrections. It helps with time management bu summarizing large texts or generating study plans. However, some students might misuse it for academic dishonesty, such as copying AI-generated work without understanding it. Educators are now adapting to this technology by promoting responsible AI use and encouraging students to treat it as a tool for learning rather than a shortcut.

Nada C. & Doha H. (Azzahrae 2 High School)

At first, I was hesitant to use ChatGPT, but overtime I realized how incredibly useful it is. It helped me organize my time especially with studies. It explains lessons in a simple and easy-to-undesratnd way, making it much easier for me to grasp subjects I once struggled with, particularly in literature. Additionally, it provides me with suitable exercises to practice, helping me gain a deeper understanding of the topics.

Basma S. (Ajyal Al Houda High School)

Well, I think relying on ChatGPT too much can be a really big problem. Some students might just copy from it instead of thinking for themselves. This can make learning less effective and kill the creativity in people generally and students specifically. So, it could be either positive or negative its all about how it’s used.

Maryam Z. (Ajdir High School)

I think it is super important to remember that ChatGPT and similar AI tools are not perfect. It can sometime give wrong answers or make up information, so you always need to double-check what it tells you. Also, using it to do all your work for you is not a good idea because you will no learn as much. That’s why we should think of it as a tool to help us learn better, not a way to avoid learning. Our own thinking and creativity are the most important parts of being a student.
